Avijit Banerjee

Prof. Avijit Banerjee is a leading international authority in cariology, operative dentistry, and minimally invasive oral care, with over 25 years of scientific, clinical, and academic impact in his field. He holds the position of Professor of Cariology & Operative Dentistry at King’s College London, alongside an honorary consultancy in Restorative Dentistry at Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospitals Foundation Trust. He currently holds three international honorary chairs and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the UK Oral & Dental Research Trust (ODRT).

National Leadership & Professional Roles

Banerjee occupies several prominent senior positions within the UK dental profession. He serves as President of the British Society of Oral & Dental Research (BSODR, 2025–2027), Chair of the Faculty of Dentists at the College of General Dentistry (CGDent, 2024–2027), and Honorary Consultant Advisor to the Office of the Chief Dental Officer, England (2020–present). Additionally, he holds multiple roles within the NIHR Research Delivery Network (RDN) as Oral & Dental Speciality Deputy National Lead, National Industry Lead, and South London RRDN Lead (2021–present).

Editorial Leadership

Since 2024, Banerjee has served as Editor-in-Chief of the British Dental Journal Portfolio, published in partnership with the British Dental Association (BDA) and Springer Nature — one of the most influential editorial positions in UK dentistry.

Research & Publications

His research expertise spans minimum intervention oral care (MIOC), minimally invasive dentistry (MID), biomaterials science, clinical trials, and dental policy. He has authored 5 internationally acclaimed textbooks — including the landmark Pickard’s Guide and its successor A Clinical Guide to Advanced Minimum Intervention Restorative Dentistry (Elsevier, 2024) — as well as 13 book chapters and over 175 peer-reviewed papers. His H-index stands at 56, with 11,192 total citations, and he has supervised 50 doctoral and master’s students.

Awards & Recognition

In 2022, Banerjee received the prestigious William H. Bowen Caries Research Distinguished Scientist Award from the International Association of Dental Research (IADR), honouring his global scientific and clinical contributions to cariology and minimally invasive operative dentistry over a quarter century. In 2024, the British Dental Association awarded him the John Tomes Medal, one of its most esteemed accolades, recognising his outstanding clinical, academic, and scientific services to the profession.
